Midway Helo
created by

Named for the Battle of Midway, the USS Midway (CVB-41) was the lead ship of her class, and the third American ship to bear the name
of Midway.

Commissioned September 10, 1945, the USS Midway was the largest warship in the world at that time and remained so for the next decade. Sailing in every ocean of the world, more than 225,000 sailors called the Midway home during her forty-seven years of service.

The Midway sailed to San Diego where she was decommissioned as the longest-serving carrier in U.S. Navy history on April 11, 1992. Stricken from the Navy List on March 17, 1997 she was taken to the Navy Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Wash. where she was put on hold. On January 5, 2004, the carrier returned to San Diego, and on June 7, 2004 opened as a major museum devoted to carriers and naval aviation.
