Flag of the United States----The colonists designed a large
number of flags to express their political sentiments and ideals.
This resulted in the use of many different flags.
In the latter part of 1775, the Continental Congress appointed
a special committee to adopt one flag for all to use. This flag
signified colonial unity against oppression and continued union
with Great Britain and was raised for the first time on January
The flag was called by different names and had several different
designs until legislation enacted in 1818 reestablished the
number of stripes at 13 and instituted the policy, "That
on the admission of every new state into the Union, one star

1960 with the addition of Hawaii.
