Painted Lady
created by

The Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) is one of the most common butterflies within the San Diego Region. There are resident populations within San Diego but the largest population is just south in Northern Baja. Every three to five years we are treated to a springtime explosion of them moving through the Region in the millions. There have been numerous reports
during their movement of getting smashed on your windshield while driving and reports from people believing they have hit Monarchs. Not as bright orange as the Monarch it is a butterfly that can provides days of enjoyment to us.---- Michael Klein
