Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis helleri) This rattlesnake has a gray, olive, or brown ground color and light-edged, darker diamonds on dorsum. It has blotches on its sides that are dark, angular and also light-edged, a light stripe from the corner of its mouth to the eye and low-contrast dark tail rings with a terminal ring poorly defined and twice as wide.
Pacific rattlesnakes that live in high elevation populations can be very dark or black dorsally, with little or no pattern definition. This is a nervous species that will aggressively defend itself when annoyed.
